Zimbabwe Taekwondo Federation secretary general Cleopas Nyangoni has praised the backing the sport has received from the South Korean embassy in the country.

His words came with the University of Zimbabwe in capital city Harare currently hosting the South Korea Amabssador's Taekwondo Championships.

As well as Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique and Malawi are also competing at the event.

"It's very crucial and critical because we are still in the developmental stages and we need their support considering also Zimbabwean industry does not fully support sport and especially these fighting sports, combat sports," said Nyangoni to The Herald on the embassy's backing.

"So their coming in has cushioned us a lot because they finance about 80 per cent of this Championship and then 20 per cent from our resources.

"It's very important because it also exposes taekwondo to the nation and to the region, that’s why you find these other countries coming."

Zimbabwe has never sent a taekwondo player to the Olympic Games.

However, the country did send Admire Thsitshiliza to this year’s World Championships in Muju in South Korea.

He lost his first round clash to Deniz Dağdelen of Turkey in the men’s under-54 kilograms division.
