Recently-crowned women's all-around world champion Morgan Hurd is among the athletes to have been named among the recipients of the United States Olympic Committee's Best of October awards.

Hurd, who claimed the gold medal in the all-around event at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Montreal last month, secured the women's prize.

Figure skater Nathan Chen, who defeated the reigning Olympic and world champion Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan to win the men’s singles gold medal at the International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix in Moscow, was named as the recipient of the men's prize.

The team award went to the brother and sister figure skating ice dance duo of Maia and Alex Shibutani.

Hurd secured her maiden world title in the Canadian city after edging Canadian rival Elsabeth Black by a slender margin.

The 16-year-old ensured her country maintained their dominance of the event - they have won every major women's all-around competition save for one since 2007 - with a score of 55.232 points.

Chen put in an impressive performance at the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating in Moscow last month, beating Japanese star Hanyu with a combined total of 293.75 points.

Maia and Alex Shibutani also triumphed at the opening event of the Winter Olympic campaign in the Russian capital.

They finished first in both the short and free dances.

The 2017 World Championships bronze medallists earned 111.94 today to collect a total of 189.24.

The awards see each National Governing Body (NGB) nominate one female, one male and one team per discipline.

An internal nominating committee selects five nominees from both the male and female categories and three from the team category to advance to the voting round.

Votes received from NGB representatives and select members of the media account for 50 per cent of the final tally, with the other half determined by online fan voting.

Each of the five monthly men's and women's finalists, along with three team finalists, automatically qualify for consideration for the 2017 Team USA Awards.
