Qualification quotas for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang will be at stake when the International Skating Union (ISU) Short Track World Cup series continues in Shanghai this weekend.

Competitors on the circuit will also have their penultimate chance to signal their intentions prior to the Winter Olympics over the course of the three-day event at the Oriental Sports Center.

Action is due to begin in the Chinese city tomorrow and conclude on Sunday (November 12).

Pyeongchang 2018 remains firmly on the mind of the athletes who are set to compete in Shanghai, including Olympic silver medallist Marianne St-Gelais of Canada.

St-Gelais is the current overall leader in the women's 500 metres classification and will aim to extend her advantage during this weekend's World Cup.

"You have to think about Pyeonghang 2018," she said.

"Every move, every step is for the Games.

"We don’t have many races left against our opponents, so when you have the shot, you have to take it.”

Britain's Elise Christie, who is among her country's main medal hopes at February's Games in Pyeongchang, is preparing for her return after missing the last World Cup in Dordrecht in The Netherlands due to injury.

Christie is expected to be among the main challengers in the women's events, along with South Korean duo Shim Suk-hee and Choi Min-jeong.

Dutchman Sjinkie Knegt will be aiming to build on his 1,000m victory in Dordrecht when he competes in Shanghai.

South Korean Seo Yi-ra, the 2017 overall world champion, is also on the list of entrants in the men's events, while multiple world champion and double Olympic medallist Han Tianyu will be hoping to use home advantage to top the podium.
