The National Olympic Committees of Jordan and Romania have signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the Association of National Olympic Committees General Assembly here.

His Royal Highness Prince Feisal Al Hussein, the President of the Jordan Olympic Committee, penned the agreement alongside Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee counterpart Mihai Covaliu.

It outlines a "framework for future collaboration" between sporting governing bodies in both countries.

This, it is hoped, will lead to a boost in areas such as sports training, sports science, sports medicine, international relations, sports management and coach training.

Basketball 3x3, which has been accepted to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic programme, will begin the collaboration alongside judo.

"This agreement is an important milestone in Jordan's plans for Tokyo 2020 and beyond," said Prince Faisal, an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member.

"Opening these channels of best practice exchange will further our aim to provide the best possible support for all our athletes.

"It is a great opportunity for our athletes, coaches and support staff to build relations and share sport development techniques and knowledge.

"I am sure this collaboration will bring exciting opportunities to both National Olympic Committees.

"Tokyo 2020 is set to be a transformational moment in the life of the Olympic Games and its resonance among young people.

"The IOC is determined to make the best of opportunities in new events like 3x3 basketball.

"Thank you to our friends of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee.

"We welcome you to the Jordan sporting family and look forward to building strong relations and a greater understanding between our countries, based on the principles of mutual respect and common interests."

Jordan celebrated their first Olympic medal at Rio 2016 when Ahmad Abughaush won gold in the men's 68 kilogram taekwondo tournament.

Romania has won 89 Olympic gold medals in its history.

"It is a very happy moment for us because Romania and Jordan have a beautiful history of collaboration through the years and it is about time we gave our good contacts with the Jordan Olympic Committee a new perspective," said Covaliu.

"HRH Prince Feisal proves to be extremely interested in the development of mutual sports relations and this moment is the highlight of former contacts between our two Olympic organisations.

"I am sure that 3x3 basketball, recently introduced in the 2020 Olympic programme, and judo, a traditional Olympic sport, are the perfect pilot project for further cooperation.

"We have a lot of common interest in developing summer sports but the winter sports also remain a challenge for both our countries, we have to admit that."
