Kolyada surged to the summit of the leaderboard as his routine yielded a total of 103.13 points at the Audi Cup of China event in the Chinese capital.

The 22-year-old upstaged the rest of the field with a superb display at the Capital Gymnasium, a venue which is due to be used when Beijing hosts the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

World Championships bronze medallist Boyang Jin of China was second on 93.89 points.

Top seed Javier Fernandez of Spain, the two-time world champion, had to settle for third as he scored 90.57 points.

"I did not look so happy at the end of my programme because this is only the short programme and everything will be decided tomorrow," European Championships bronze medallist Kolyada said.

"So I did not let my emotions out. 

"Overall, I enjoyed my performance today. 

"The only negative thing was the change foot camel spin – I somehow lost my focus."

Reigning world pairs champions Wenjing Sui and Cong Han of China showed little signs of rustiness on their first Grand Prix of Figure Skating appearance of the season as they finished day one at the top of the leaderboard.

The Chinese duo scored 80.14 points to edge compatriots Xiaoyu Yu and Hao Zhang, who ended the short programme on 71.37 points.

Italy’s Nicole Della Monica and Matteo Guarise sit third on 63.76 points.

Canada's Gabrielle Daleman, who is also competing at her first Grand Prix competition of the campaign, is the leader in a close women's event.

The World Championships bronze medallist registered a season's best score of 70.65 points.

Japan’s Wakaba Higuchi is marginally adrift in second, having scored 70.53, with Russia’s Elena Radionova occupying third place on 70.48 points.

The Grand Prix in the Chinese capital continues tomorrow.
