The World Air Sports Federation (FAI) has awarded the inaugural World Drone Racing Championships to Chinese city Shenzen.

The host was selected at the organisation's 111th General Conference at the Royal Savoy Hotel in Olympic capital Lausanne.

Competition is now set to take place in the first half of November next year.

It comes after the FAI invited bids for the maiden event in July.

The governing body has moved quickly to organise drone racing competition with the technology continuing to become more prominent across the world.

Racers from around the globe are now set to compete for what will be the sport's biggest prizes in Shenzen.

The FAI also voted to award the 2019 Conference to Marrakech in Morocco during their time in Lausanne.

President Frits Brink handed out the prizes at the FAI Awards, which were attended by International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach. 

Several guest speakers were given the opportunity to take to the stage and present their air-sports organisations or projects to delegates. 

They included Erich Wolf from Red Bull Air Race and Yuriy Letser from Noosphere. 

Magdi El Derini, the deputy ambassador of Egypt to Switzerland, spoke with Luxor hosting next year's General Conference.
