Hosts Hungary won all three of their matches today to finish top of Pool A at the first round of the European Korfball Championships in Budapest.

The Hungarians started the day with an 18-5 win over Ukraine at the Gabányi László Sportshall.

They followed this up by beating Greece 16-8 and Sweden 16-9.

Greece came second after defeating Sweden 10-8 and Ukraine 19-15 in their two other games.

Sweden took third spot courtesy of their 13-12 victory over Ukraine.

In Pool B, Serbia secured first place after registering three wins out of three.

They defeated Armenia 11-2, Switzerland 17-7 and Ireland 17-16.

Ireland had earlier overcome Switzerland 16-2 and Armenia 15-8 and thus finished second.

Switzerland beat Armenia 10-6 in the battle to avoid ending up in last place.

Tomorrow's action is due to see Hungary face Ireland and Serbia meet Greece in the semi-finals.

The contests will be followed by the final and the third-place play-off. 

The top two teams at the event will qualify for the final round of the European Korfball Championships, scheduled to take place in The Netherlands from October 13 to 21 next year.
