Home favourites Joy Stubbe and Madelein Meppelink beat Japan’s Miki Ishii and Megumi Murakami today to book their place in the women’s final at the International Volleyball Federation Beach World Tour Aalsmeer Open.

The Dutch pair claimed a 21-15, 21-18 win at the Beach Indoor Center to give themselves a shot at winning the gold medal tomorrow.

They had come from behind to beat France’s Alexia Richard and Margaux Carrere 22-24, 21-14, 15-11.

Awaiting Stubbe and Meppelink in the final are Germany’s Kim Behrens and Sandra Ittlinger, who defeated the United States’ Betsi Flint and Kelley Larsen 21-17, 16-21, 15-9 in the other semi-final.

Behrens and Ittlinger earlier overcome Romania’s Adriana-Maria Matei and Beata Vaida 21-18, 13-21, 15-9 in the quarter-finals.

The bronze medal match between Ishii and Murakami and Flint and Larsen will precede the final tomorrow.

The men’s quarter-finals were also held today as all three pairings representing hosts The Netherlands crashed out of the competition.

Ruben Penninga and Tom van Steenis lost 17-21, 21-16, 14-16 to Ukraine’s Sergiy Popov and Oleksii Denin before Dirk Boehlé and Steven van de Velde fell to a 19-21, 17-21 defeat at the hands of Turkey’s Murat Giginoglu and Hasan Hüseyin Mermer.

A miserable day for the home nation’s men’s teams was complete when Sven Vismans and Jannes van der Ham lost 12-21, 13-21 to America's William Kolinske and Miles Evans.

In the one men’s quarter-final not featuring a Dutch duo, Italy’s Enrico Rossi and Marco Caminati overcame France’s Maxime Thiercy and Arnaud Gauthier-Rat 15-21, 21-17, 15-9.

Tomorrow’s semi-finals are due to see Rossi and Caminati face Popov and Denin and Giginoglu and Mermer go up against Kolinske and Evans.

They will be followed by the gold and bronze medal matches.
