South Africa drew 3-3 with hosts Egypt today at the men’s Africa Cup of Nations in Ismailia, meaning both teams remain undefeated from their three round-robin matches.

Tim Drummond’s 48th-minute goal secured South Africa a share of spoils at the Suez Canal Hockey Stadium.

It came after Mohamed Husseinen, Ahmed Gamal and Ahmed Elganaini had all got their names on the scoresheet to bring Egypt from 2-0 down and put them into the lead.

Taine Paton and Nqobile Ntuli were South Africa’s first two goalscorers.

Both teams now have seven points from their three round-robin games, with Egypt top of the pool by virtue of a superior goal difference - plus-15 to South Africa’s plus-eight.

One point behind them are Ghana, who came from 1-0 down to beat Nigeria 5-1 today.

Oluwatosin Fowobaje put winless Nigeria in front before goals from Ghana’s Luke Damalie, Emmanuel Ankomah, Charles Abbiw, Alfred Ntiamoah and Ernest Opoku turned the match firmly in their country’s favour.

Round-robin action is due to conclude on Saturday (October 28) when South Africa face Kenya and Ghana go up against Egypt.

In the women’s event, South Africa and Ghana both made it three wins out of three round-robin outings.

South Africa thrashed Egypt 11-0 with Dirkie Chamberlain notching four goals.

Lilian du Plessis and Sulette Damons each bagged braces, while Sylvia Van Jaarsveldt, Quanita Bobbs and Stephanie Baxter scored one apiece.

Ghana, meanwhile, triumphed 1-0 over Nigeria thanks to a goal from Lydia Afriyie.

They are due to meet South Africa on Saturday in a match that will determine the pool winner.

The South Africans go into that match with a better goal difference - plus-21 to Ghana’s plus-eight.

Egypt and Kenya is the other women's game scheduled for Saturday.  

The winners of both tournaments will book their places at next year's World Cups.
