Abakar Djermah has been elected as the new President of the National Olympic Committee of Chad.

The official received 29 votes to replace General Idriss Dokony Adiker in the top job.

"I want to congratulate General Idriss Dokony Adiker and his team for the last four years spent at the head of our National Olympic Committee," Djermah said after his victory.

"I want to underline his fair play for having accepted the result and for having congratulated me.

"This is an example to be followed when the day will come for us to be replaced as well."

Djermah has now targeted the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in Japan's capital.

"In 2020, I want Chad to be present in Tokyo but not as an invited country," he said.

"I want our athletes to be qualified."

Djermah's background is in judo.

He is also the President of the Judo Federation of Chad and a sport director at the African Judo Union.

The African country made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 1964 and has competed at every Summer edition since Los Angeles 1984.

They sent a team of two athletes to Rio 2016 - men's 400 metres runner Bachir Mahamat and women's 5,000m competitor Bibiro Ali Taher.
