Defending champions Australia and runners-up Iran each enjoyed huge victories today in the men's draw on the second day of the 2017 International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) Asia Oceania Championships.

Both teams racked up precisely 91 points in overpowering their respective opponents at the Chinese Paralympic Training Venue in Beijing.

Australia, who beat Iran 78-60 in the 2015 final, romped past Chinese Taipei 91-13 in Group A.

Iran were similarly comfortable in thrashing New Zealand 91-15 in Group C.

Hosts China scored even more points in a 106-24 Group D success over United Arab Emirates.

Thailand were forced to work harder elsewhere in Group C before prevailing 68-48 over Saudi Arabia.

In today's other matches, South Korea dominated Afghanistan for a 107-22 success in Group B while Hong Kong battled hard for a 56-47 win versus Kuwait in Group B.

Australia gained a first win in the corresponding women's draw by overcoming Japan 75-59.

China continued their unbeaten start by cruising past Iran 79-22.

Teams are battling to secure places at next year’s World Championships.

The four semi-finalists in the men's event will secure a ticket to the 2018 World Championships, scheduled to take place in Hamburg next year from August 17 to 26.

With only two spots available at the World Championships for the women’s teams, Australia, Iran, Japan and hosts China will play a round-robin to determine semi-final placings with the victorious sides ensuring their passage to Hamburg.
