The 2017 International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) Asia Oceania Championships are due to begin tomorrow in Beijing, where qualification for places at next year’s World Championships will be up for grabs.

There will be 45 matches will played on two courts over six days at the Chinese Paralympic Training Venue.

In the men’s competition, the 14 teams will be split into four pools and play a round-robin.

Defending champions Australia, who beat Iran 78-60 in the 2015 final, have been drawn in Group A alongside Chinese Taipei and Iraq.

Japan, the 2015 bronze medallists, will play in Group B with Hong Kong and Kuwait.

Iran will lock horns with Thailand, Saudi Arabia and New Zealand in Group C.

Hosts China will meet South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and Afghanistan in Group D.

The top two in each pool will progress through to the quarter-finals.

The four semi-finalists will secure a ticket to the 2018 World Championships, scheduled to take place in Hamburg next year from August 17 to 26.

"It is of great importance to deliver our best performance in these competitions since it is our step towards the World Championship in 2018," Iran head coach Mohammadreza Dastyar said.

With only two spots available at the World Championships for the women’s teams, Australia, Iran, Japan and hosts China will play a round-robin to determine semi-final placings with the victorious sides ensuring their passage to Hamburg.

Tomorrow’s men’s action on court one is due to see China face Afghanistan, Australia meet Iraq and Thailand go up against New Zealand.

Court two will feature games between Japan and Kuwait, Iran and Saudi Arabia, and South Korea and the UAE.

Beginning the women’s competition will be China’s clash with Australia on court one and Japan’s match with Iran on court two.
