In the absence of world champion Gulnaz Gubaydullina of Russia, the Olympic champion Chloe Esposito of Australia and her celebrated compatriot Laura Asadauskaite, Batuleviciute seized her chance and claimed victory at the Qatar Foundation Recreation Centre and Al Shaqab Arena.

She was joined on the podium by silver medallist Alice Sotero of Italy and bronze medallist Elodie Clouvel of France.

Today, brimming with confidence after her World Military Championships success last month, Batuleviciute led from the front in the fencing, finishing first with 22 victories and 10 defeats.

Swimming was less prosperous for the leader as Clouvel topped the standings in 2 mins 13.56sec.

Only three of the 17 participating athletes managed a clean round in riding, but one of them was Batuleviciute, whose perfect round kept up her momentum in the race for gold.

Anna Maliszewska of Poland and Ireland's Coleman Lenehan also scored 300 while Sotero and Clouvel stayed in touch on 298 and 291 respectively.

The outcome was that Clouvel started the laser run in first place in front of Lenehan, Sotero and Batuleviciute.

Clouvel protected her lead until the second shooting range, where Sotero and Batuleviciute stole the initiative.

Batuleviciute proved she had the greater composure on the day as she edged ahead of Sotero to win by seven seconds, with Clouvel crossing the line five seconds later.

"It's the best day - I am so excited that I got the gold," said Batuleviciute.

The men's event, featuring Rio 2016 Olympic champion Alexander Lesun of Russia, brings competition to a close tomorrow.
