Japan claimed a further two titles on the final day of action at the International Judo Federation (IJF) Junior World Championships in Zagreb, increasing their overall gold medal tally to eight.

Both of the East Asian nation’s victories came in women’s competition with Shiyu Umezu winning the under 78 kilograms category and Akira Sone coming out on top in the over 78kg division.

All-Japan Junior Championships gold medallist Umezu beat Bratislava European Cup winner Teresa Zenker of Germany in her final at the Croatian capital’s Dom Sportova Arena.

Umezu overpowered Zenker on the ground to apply a ushiro-kuzure-kesa-gatame hold and ensure she won all five of her fights by ippon.

Victory puts her in contention for a place among the Japan team for the final IJF Grand Slam of the season in Tokyo this December.

The first bronze medal was won by Russia’s Marina Bukreeva, who held down Venezuela’s Karen Leon for the full 20 seconds and ippon.

The second was claimed by Portugal’s Patricia Sampaio as Lea Gobec failed to secure what would have been hosts Croatia’s first and only medal.

In the women’s over 78kg final, Düsseldorf Grand Prix bronze medallist Sone defeated compatriot Hikaru Kodama to win her second world title and first at junior level.

A left-sided makikomi effort was the only score of the contest and was in the favour of Tokyo Grand Slam silver medallist Sone, who added to her Cadet World Championships win from 2015.

Cuba’s Eliannis Aguilar beat Kazakhstan’s Kamila Berlikash to the first of the two bronze medals before Brazil’s Beatriz Souza held off Poland’s Anita Formela to clinch the second.

Today’s men’s competition saw Azerbaijan’s Zelym Kotsoiev overcame Russia’s Arman Adamian in the under 100kg final.

It was a repeat of the outcome of last month’s Junior European Championships final.

Kotsoiev had the conditioning to push his opponent onto the backfoot in the final minute before throwing with a sumi-gaeshi for a waza-ari score that proved to be decisive.

Tajikistan’s Temur Rakhimov and Japan’s Takaya Yamaguchi were the bronze medallists as Germany’s Daniel Zorn and the United States’ John Jayne just missed out on a podium place.

The other men’s winner was Russia’s Inal Tasoev, who overcame Austria’s Stephan Hegyi in the over 100kg final.

Tasoev was swift and forceful in his attacks, only for it to wane in the second half of the final.

Zagreb Grand Prix silver medallist Hegyi pulled back one of the two waza-ari scores he had conceded with a te-waza action, but his opponent held on for gold in the last individual final of the competition.

It meant Tasoev replicated his victory over Hegyi from the Junior European Championships final.

Japan’s Daigo Kagawa won the first bronze medal match to the disappointment of The Netherlands’ Jur Spijkers.

He was joined by Slovenia’s Enej Marinic, who later overcame Uzbekistan’s Alisher Yusupov.

Azerbaijan were the only other country apart from Japan to win more than one gold as they finished second in the medal standings.

Action in Zagreb is due to conclude tomorrow when competition will be held in the mixed team event.

It will be the third edition of the event, which is set to appear at an Olympic Games for the first time at Tokyo 2020.
