Colombian Fernando Gaviria sprinted to victory on the opening stage of the inaugural Tour of Guangxi in Beihai today.

The six-stage race marks the final leg of the 2017 International Cycling Union (UCI) World Tour season.

It saw the field tackle a 107 kilometres circuit around the city in South East China.

Quick-Step Floors' Gaviria capitalised after a four-man breakaway was caught in the final stages before bursting clear to triumph in 2 hours 20min 01sec.

It marked an 11th victory of the season for the 23-year-old, winner of four stages of the Giro d'Italia in May.

Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen, riding for LottoNL-Jumbo, was awarded the same time after crossing second.

Germany and Bora-Hansgrohe's Pascal Ackermann finished third.

Gaviria also leads the overall standings by a single second heading into stage two.

Silvan Dillier of Switzerland and BMC Racing lies in second place after securing nine bonus seconds during the three intermediate sprints which took place when he was in the breakaway.

Groenewegen lies third overall, a further three seconds back.

The peloton are tomorrow due to tackle a 156.7km second stage journey from Qinzhou to Nanning.
