Allianz has been confirmed as the title sponsor for the 2018 World Para Swimming European Championships in Ireland’s capital Dublin.

The announcement is a significant milestone on the road to the event, which is scheduled to take place at the National Aquatic Centre in the National Sports Campus from August 13 to 19.

Ireland’s Ellen Keane, the bronze medallist in the women's 100 metres breaststroke SB8 event at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, joined Allianz Ireland chief executive Sean McGrath and Local Organising Committee chairperson Miriam Malone to announce the sponsorship at the National Aquatic Centre.

Next year’s Championships will mark the first time that Ireland has hosted a major, international, Para-sport competition.

Over 500 athletes are due to participate, representing at least 40 nations.

Allianz first partnered with Paralympics Ireland in 2010 and, in that time, has been considered instrumental to the promotion and growth of Para-sports in the country.

Dublin 2018 claims Allianz's support of the Championships further demonstrates its continued backing for Para-athletes in the build-up to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

"We are delighted to welcome Allianz as the title sponsor of the Championships,” Malone said.

"Allianz are great friends to Paralympics Ireland in recent years and are synonymous with Para-sports across the globe.

"August 2018 will see us host an historic sporting event that will showcase our athletes and our facilities to an international audience, along with our host partners Sport Ireland, Swim Ireland and Fáilte Ireland.

"Having a title sponsor like Allianz will certainly help with the aim of providing a world-class sporting occasion."

McGrath said: "We are delighted to announce our support of the 2018 Para Swimming Allianz European Championships which affords Irish athletes the chance to perform on a global stage from the familiar and world-class National Aquatic Centre.

"As an organisation, Allianz exists to enable communities to live life to the fullest, without fear or compromise.

"Our global sponsorship of the International Paralympic Committee and local partnership with Paralympics Ireland allows us to support elite athletes who have overcome adversity and I look forward to welcoming Europe's top athletes to Dublin next August."

In August, Sinéad Gordon was appointed as event director for the 2018 World Para Swimming European Championships.

Gordon is responsible for the planning, organisation and delivery of the event.

She is working closely with governing body World Para Swimming and other partners, and came into the role after more than 10 years of experience in the sports industry.

Her past roles include work at the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Baku 2015 European Games and the Ashgabat 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.

Gordon has also held roles at the International Basketball Federation, Basketball Ireland and British Basketball.

Dublin was awarded the event in July.
