Mexico’s Linda Ochoa-Anderson topped the women's compound ranking round on home soil at the World Archery Championships, which began today.

The home favourite was the only archer to score more than 700 points as qualification action with the non-Olympic bow began at Campo Marte.

In the end the 30-year-old scored 701 out of 720 to become top seed for the competition.

"I feel great," she said.

"I changed my focus a bit to think about total score each end, and then I started a bit lazy with a 56, and I think I was ranked low.

"Then, I told myself 'you’ve got to put gas into it' and it worked much better towards the back half."

Belgium’s Sarah Prieels finished second on 699 with world number one Sarah Sonnichsen from Denmark level on the same score.

However, she will be seeded third due to shooting one less arrow in the 10-ring.

In the men's compound ranking round, defending champion Stephan Hansen of Denmark scored 712 to top the pile.

He beat South Korea's Kim Jongho to the top spot by a single point.

"Being first in the ranking round shows I have the skills to [win again]," Hansen said.

"But it is a little bit of luck sometimes you need.

"I have had luck and shot well this year - so if I could just continue doing that here, I’ll be really happy."

With the Olympic recurve bow, Dutchman Sjef van den Berg topped the men's ranking round.

He scored 676 out of a possible 720 points to position himself as first seed.

"It feels great," the 22-year-old said.

"To be honest, I didn't know I was doing so well while shooting so I was just shooting my own shots and I was getting annoyed at my own shots.

"I feel like there was a little bit of luck but it's nice to seed first."

South Korea's Im Dong Hyun, the 2007 world champion, finished two down on van den Berg on 674.

Italian archer Mauro Nespoli seeded third with 672.

Kim Woojin, South Korea's defending champion, also scored 672 but finished fourth due to fewer 10s.

Action continues tomorrow.
