Germany and the United States progressed to the quarter-finals of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup with thumping victories in India today.

The German side powered into the last eight with a 4-0 victory over Colombia at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.

The United States then went one better as they thrashed Paraguay 5-0 in today's evening match at the same venue.

Germany took the lead in fortuitous circumstances seven minutes into their round of 16 clash with Colombia as Jann-Fiete Arp took advantage of a goalkeeping error to put his side in front.

Yann Bisseck rose to head home Sahverdi Cetin’s corner to double Germany's advantage six minutes before the break and they added a third shortly after the restart.

Arp turned provider for John Yeboah to make it 3-0 and then scored his second of the game after 65 minutes to wrap up a convincing victory.

Germany will face either Honduras or Brazil in the last eight.

Weah scored his first after 19 minutes with a fine effort before he added a second, a contender for goal of the tournament, eight minutes into the second-half.

Andrew Carleton added a third goal before supplying captain Josh Sargent to make it four, before Weah completed his hat-trick with the game's final goal 13 minutes from time.

There are four round of 16 matches scheduled to take place tomorrow.

France play Spain at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati, while the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata is the venue for England against Japan.
