England defended their European Open Netball Championships title in style as they comfortably beat hosts Wales in Cardiff.

The Roses were again in dominant form as they maintained their 100 per cent record with a 72-50 victory at the Sport Wales National Centre.

The triumph for England, who were third at the 2015 World Cup, came despite the nation fielding an inexperienced side.

They gave six players their debuts - Rosie Huckle, Vicki Oyesola, Gabby Marshall, George Fisher, Summer Artman and Sophie Drakeford-Lewis - during the weekend, where they also recorded wins over Northern Ireland, Scotland and invitational side Fiji.

A last-gasp goal from Lisa Bowman gave Northern Ireland the silver medal as they claimed a slender 46-45 victory against Scotland in the round-robin tournament.

The two sides were locked in a close battle and could not be separated at 45-45 going into the dying seconds.

But goal shooter Bowman scored a dramatic winner at the perfect time to ensure the Northern Irish team pipped their Scottish rivals to second place.

England's next test will be a three-test home series with Malawi.

The opening match is scheduled for November 24 at the Copper Box Arena, which hosted handball at the London 2012 Olympic Games, before they face each other at the same venue two days later.

The third test of the series is due to be held at the Genting Arena in Birmingham.

England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland are all set to compete in the netball event at next year's Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.
