Caroline Garcia upset new world number one Simona Halep in the women's final as Rafael Nadal clinched the men's title with a dominant victory over Nick Kyrgios at the China Open in Beijing.

Unseeded French player Garcia continued her superb run of form of late as she comfortably overcame Halep, the Romanian who will be confirmed as the world number one for the first time tomorrow, in straight sets at the Olympic Green Tennis Center.

Garcia was broken in the first game of the final but recovered to claim a 6-4, 7-6 win and secure her second consecutive crown following her recent triumph at the Wuhan Open.

Her victory also marked her 11th consecutive win on the Women's Tennis Association Tour.

"It was such an amazing two weeks and it went so fast," the 23-year-old, who reached the quarter-finals of the French Open earlier this year, said.

"The key was definitely to be aggressive and try to dominate the rallies - my serve was really an important thing because she's a very good returner.

"I have to be aggressive, but I have to control myself sometimes."

Nadal, who won his 16th Grand Slam title with victory at the US Open last month, was also in confident form as he swept aside Kyrgios 6-2, 6-1 in a one-sided men's final.

The Spaniard remains unbeaten since he became world number one in August and put in a ruthless display on his way to his 75th career title.

Nadal will now head to Shanghai for the Shanghai Masters, which began with first round action at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena today.

Jared Donaldson will be the first opponent for the 31-year-old after he beat Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.

Elsewhere, Frenchman Lucas Pouille also progressed as he ousted Russian Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-2.
