Finland won the opening match of the World Mixed Curling Championships in Champéry today.

The European nation battled to a narrow 5-4 success over Austria in Group D at the Palladium de Champéry.

Norway, the 2015 winners, were among the victors in today's later clashes.

They defeated Slovakia 6-4 in Group D.

Kazakhstan also thrashed Luxembourg 8-3 in Group E, while Wales edged Croatia 6-4 in Group C.

Hosts Switzerland overcame Czech Republic 7-4 in Group B while Israel got the better of Hong Kong in Group A, 6-3. 

Action started today and will continue until October 14.

Each team consists of two male and two female players.

Round-robin competition is due to take place until next Tuesday (October 12) before knock-out action begin.
