Sarasota in Florida will host the 12th stop on the International Triathlon Union World Cup series starting tomorrow - although all racing has been switched to a duathlon format due to high levels of algae in the water.

The event will mark the first major World Cup event to take place in United States since Chicago hosted the Grand Final in 2015 and the first World Cup there since Des Moines, Iowa in 2010.

According to USA Triathlon, levels of algae was too high at Nathan Benderson Park following "uncontrollable recent weather conditions" following the impact of Hurricane Irma last month.

Home hope Katie Zaferes will be a leading contender in tomorrow's women race.

She finished third in the overall World Triathlon Series this season and also won the New Plymouth World Cup.

Team-mates Taylor Spivey, Chelsea Burns and Tamara Gorman will also feature in a strong American team.

Melanie Santos, the Portuguese rising star and under-23 world silver medallist, is another contender along with Dominika Jamnicky of Canada.

South Africa's Henri Schoeman will start as favourite in the men's race on Sunday (October 8).

He will be hoping to emulate the 2016 form in which he won Olympic bronze as well as a World Triathlon Series victory in Cozumel.

Russia's Dmitry Polyanskiy will be another contender, although he may struggle more by the lack of a swimming event.

France's Aurelien Raphael and The Netherlands' Jorik van Egdom will also feature alongside much local talent.

The American team includes cycling specialists Ben Kanute and Eric Lagerstrom as well as Kevin McDowell.
