Northern Ireland claimed a stunning one-point win over hosts Wales on the opening day of the European Open Netball Championships in Cardiff.

The hosts trailed 38-33 going into the fourth and final quarter at the Sport Wales National Centre but managed to cut the deficit in the closing stages of the match.

The Northern Irish team stunned the Welsh crowd, however, by stealing a one-point 47-46 win.

In today's first match, Scotland recorded a comfortable 52-34 win over invitational side Fiji.

All five teams are looking to hone their preparations as they begin to turn their attention to next year's Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast.

Action is due to continue tomorrow with three matches.

Defending champions England begin their title defence with matches against Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Fiji will meet Wales in the third match.

UK public-service broadcaster the BBC has acquired rights to the tournament.

They are showing live coverage and highlights of the event on television, online platforms and via the BBC Sport mobile application.
