Jessica Fox earned the women’s K1 title on the penultimate day of the Canoe Slalom World Championships in Pau.

The Australian had failed to defend her C1 crown yesterday when she finished sixth, but enjoyed better fortunes in the K1 competition.

Fox came into the Championships having never secured a victory at the French course, but the 23-year-old moved to within touching distance of ending that record by achieving a time of 1min 37.14sec.

She was forced to watch several rivals attempt to dip below her time, including recently crowned World Cup winner Ricarda Funk.

The German would finish 5.48sec off the pace to move into third place in the standings, with Slovakia’s Jana Dukatova a second faster to lie in the silver medal position.

Britain’s Fiona Pennie, who was fastest in the semi-finals, was unable to alter the podium positions on the final run due to missing a gate.

“This one is really special,” said Fox, who previously won the K1 event back in 2014.

“Yesterday was really disappointing and exhausting and draining, and I knew I had to come back today with a fresh start and try and make that final.

“Sometimes in training I’m able to do things to rival the guys, but then in racing I’m too safe.

“Today I’m really proud of that race because I feel like I attacked it the way I wanted to.”

The victory saw Fox secure the seventh world title of her career, having won her first back in 2013.

Slovenia’s Benjamin Savsek has endured frustration at previous editions of the World Championships, having won two silver and three bronze medals.

He ended his wait for a gold medal by triumphing in the men’s C1 competition, clocking a time of 1:34.81 despite a two second penalty.

Slovakia’s Alexander Slafkovsky produced a clean run, but was forced to settle for a silver medal in 1:36.29.

Slafkovsky’s team-mate Michal Martikan rounded off the podium positions, as he crossed the finish in 1:38.23.

The Championships are due to conclude tomorrow with extreme K1 events for men and women.
