The Chinese coastal city of Weihai is preparing to host its first ever International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Cup leg.

Weihai is located on the coast of China’s north-eastern Shandong province.

After years of hosting long distance ITU races, Weihai will make its World Cup debut tomorrow.

Athletes will swim 1,500 metres and cycle six laps of 6.7 kilometres before a 10km run will see them complete four laps on a flat circuit along the coast.

A total of 34 men will compete with Spain's Uxio Abuin Ares among the favourites.

He won two World Cup stages last season in South Korea and Japan and just a week ago proved that his form is improving, finishing third in the Huelva World Cup in an impressive field.

As well as Ares, another Spaniard, Antonio Serrat Seoane, will be in action after he came fifth in the under-23 World Championships two weeks ago.

South African Wian Sullwand will be looking for his second podium of the season after finishing third earlier this year in Cape Town.

Switzerland's Jolanda Annen will be one of the contenders for the women's title.

The rising star finished 10th in the World Championship this year, after collecting her first ever victory in a World Cup in Cagliari and her first ever top-five finish in the World Triathlon Series in Edmonton.

She will have to watch out for Austrian Lisa Perterer, who recently collected a bronze medal in the Yucatan World Cup.

Another competitor with World Cup success this season is Australian Emma Jackson.

She was a winner in Mooloolaba and finished fifth more recently in Karlovy Vary.

Both races are due to take place tomorrow with the men's event going first.
