Tokyo has been given a taster of 3x3 basketball as the Japanese professional league final was held in the Olympic host city, with three years until the discipline's Games’ debut.

Organisers claim that a total of 25,000 fans attended the final of the 3x3 EXE Premier League, which took place at Roppongi Hills.

It was claimed the level of support showed fans are eagerly anticipating watching the event at Tokyo 2020.

A venue has yet to be confirmed for the sport at the Games, but it could potentially feature at the proposed Aomi urban sports venue.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) coordination commission visited the proposed skateboarding and sport climbing site in July, but stated locations for 3x3 basketball and BMX Freestyle were yet to be determined.

Both disciplines were added to the Games programme by the IOC earlier that month.

The fourth edition of the Japanese professional league featured a record 18 teams, which included several foreign players.

Competition three divided into three conferences, with eight rounds taking place before a final.

Team Tokyo were ultimately confirmed as the winners of the competition, as they overcame reigning champions Team Hamamatsu 18-14 in the deciding match.

The winners were the only team in the final stage of the event to feature four Japanese players, raising hopes of potential home success at the Games.

Both Team Tokyo and Team Hamamatsu are due to feature at the International Basketball Federation 3x3 World Tour Chengdu Masters event.

It will offer them a chance to potentially qualify for the World Tour Final in Beijing, which will take place in October.
