Indonesia stunned Thailand in the final of the men’s seven-a-side football competition at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Para Games in Kuala Lumpur.

The Thai team had headed into the final as the clear favourites at the National Sports Council ground in Bukit Jalil, having dominated the round robin stage of competition.

Indonesia would take a surprise lead with a goal from Muhaimi Yahya in the 18th minute of play, before Cahyana doubled the advantage.

With the match heading into injury time and the result effectively assured, Muhaimi sealed a 3-0 victory with his second goal.

"It is strange that we came as underdogs and are going home with the gold medal," said Fadilah Umar, Indonesia's coach.

"The players are excited with this win which was unexpected.

"We will be better prepared for the Asian Para Games as I am sure expectations will be high after our victory here."

Hosts Malaysia earned the bronze medal, after they secured a 4-0 win over Singapore.

Thailand would emerge as the winners of the five-a-side football competition, as they overcame Myanmar in the visually impaired event.
