Madrid's Estadio Metropolitano, the new home of Atlético Madrid, has been selected to host the 2019 Champions League final by UEFA after beating off the challenge of Baku's Olympic Stadium.

The Azerbaijani venue will instead host the Europa League final in the same year.

The decision, made by the continental body during an Executive Committee meeting in Nyon, comes shortly after the Spanish La Liga team moved into their new home at the start of this season.

It marks the first Champions League final to take place in Madrid since the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium - the home of Real Madrid - hosted the 2010 final in which Inter Milan beat Bayern Munich 2-0.

The decision came despite UEFA having reported technical problems at the 67,000 capacity venue during their evaluation stage.

They ultimately claimed to make their choice on factors such as the accommodation and transport capabilities to cater for visiting fans.

The match will be played on June 1 in 2019.

Baku, meanwhile, received the consolation prize of hosting the second-tier Europa League final on May 29.

It will take place in the 69,870-seater stadium built for the 2015 European Games, where it hosted Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

It is already due to host three group games and a quarter-final at Euro 2020, which will be staged across the continent.

The NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium in Kyiv is due to host the 2018 Champions League final while the Europa League final will take place at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais in the French city.
