Indonesia dominated the opening day of athletics at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Para Games in Kuala Lumpur, winning nine of the 24 gold medals on offer.

Putri Aulia was one of the Indonesian champions at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium as she claimed gold in the women’s 100 metres T13 in a new Games record time of 12.66 sec.

Indonesia's second gold of the day came through Endang Sari Sitoru in the women’s 100m T12.

She clocked 13.07 to also set a new Games record.

A third record of the day was then broken by Karisma Evi Tiaran as she net a new Games best in the women’s long jump T44 of 4.19 metres.

Indonesia’s other gold medallists today included Abdul Halim Dalimunte in the men's 100m T11, Setiyo Budi Hartanto in the men's long jump T46 and Sapto Yogo Purnomo in the men's 100m T38.

Agustinus Tinabela also climbed to the top of the podium for Indonesia in the men's 5,000m T12/13 event and was joined by Yahya, who won the men's discus F44 competition.

Insan Nurhaida completed Indonesia's sensational day as she won the women's 100m T36 final to record her country's ninth gold.

In powerlifting, Lê Văn Công of Vietnam claimed his sixth consecutive ASEAN Para Games gold medal.

He took gold in the men's 49 kilograms category with a best lift of 181kg at the Malaysian International Trade and Exhibition Centre.

The 33-year-old is the reigning Paralympic champion and showed his class by setting a new Games record, beating the previous mark of 178kg set in Singapore two years ago.

“I am extremely excited with my achievement of winning the sixth gold in the Asean Para Games," said Van Cong.

"This is a great moment for me in my preparation for the World Championships in Mexico."

Pia of Laos won silver following a lift of 130kg while fellow countryman Siman Eay took bronze on 114kg.

There was further success for Vietnam as Nguyen Binh An secured gold in the men’s 54kg by setting a new Games record of 181kg.

Thailand’s Amorntep Pongsa won silver on 130kg and Timor Leste’s Silverio N Soares rounded out the podium with a best attempt of 100kg.
