South Korea's Son Wan-Ho will be hoping to put last week's disappointment on home soil behind him as the Badminton World Federation Japan Open gets underway in Tokyo tomorrow.

Action is due to take place at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium until Sunday (September 24).

Son, a bronze medallist at last month's World Championships, leads the men's seedings eager to recover from crashing out of last week's Korea Open in the semi-finals.

The world number one suffered a shock defeat against unseeded Indonesian opponent Anthony Sinisuka Ginting.

Ginting went on to surprisingly win the tournament and will be optimistic of causing a similar upset in Japan this week.

Son still awaits his first round opponent, who is due to come from tomorrow's qualifying round.

Shi Yuqi of China is seeded second in the Japanese capital while Denmark's Viktor Axelsen and Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei are also among the favourites.

In the women's tournament, Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu Ying is the top seed.

Tai recently claimed the women's singles title on home soil at the Taipei 2017 Summer Universiade.

She was beaten in the second round of the Korea Open last time out though and will be keen to go further in Japan.

Tai faces stiff competition in the form of home favourite and world number two Akane Yamaguchi, who finds herself seeded second.

Pusarla V Sindhu of India secured the women's Korea Open title in Seoul and is seeded fourth in Japan.

Action begins tomorrow with a host of qualification matches before the first official round of the tournament takes place on Wednesday (September 20).
