Team Sunweb enjoyed double gold on the opening day of the International Cycling Union (UCI) World Road Championships by winning both the men’s and women’s team time trials in Bergen.

Their women’s team were first to tackle the undulating 42 kilometre time trial course in the Norwegian city, with their six riders producing an impressive pace.

Dutch riders Lucinda Brand, Floortje Mackaij, Sabrina Stultiens and Ellen Van Dijk were joined by Canada’s Leah Kirchmann and the United States’ Coryn Rivera on the course.

The team completed the course in an impressive time of 55min 41.63sec to take the lead in the standings.

It would prove enough to beat defending champions Boels-Dolmans to the title, after they finished 12 seconds off the pace of Team Sunweb.

The podium was rounded off by Cervélo-Bigla, who came across the line 28.03 down on the winners to win bronze for the second straight year.

Team Sunweb were able to celebrate a second victory later in the day, with their men’s squad of Germany’s Lennard Kamna, Denmark’s Soren Kragh Andersen, Australia’s Michael Matthews and the Dutch trio of Tom Dumoulin, Wilco Kelderman and Sam Oomen producing a strong display.

They finished the course in a time of 47:50.42 to take the world title.

“It's crazy, first the women, and now us,” said Dumoulin.

“The team was so homogenous.

“It was absolutely amazing.

"We had a very good pace and kept it all the way to the line.

“We tried to keep together especially on the long climb, and that just about worked out.”

BMC Racing went close to beating Team Sunweb’s time, but the American-registered team finished eight seconds behind the winners.

The podium was completed by Team Sky, after they crossed the finish 22.35 seconds off of Team Sunweb’s pace.

The focus will switch to the individual time trial events tomorrow, with a junior women's event over a 16.1km course and men’s under-23 race over 37.2km scheduled to take place.
