Plans to hold the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) Baikal Cup every year have been launched after a successful first edition in Irkutsk.

More than 100 athletes from 15 countries competed in combat sambo at the inaugural event, held at the Labour Palace of Sports.

It was held to mark the 80th anniversary of the Irkutsk region, with seven weight divisions contested.

"I think that the tournament was a success and a successful tournament has the right to be continued," said Irkutsk region's Sports Minister Ilya Reznik.

"That's why we plan to make the Baikal Cup traditional.

"All guests, who arrived from 15 countries, mentioned the high level of organisation.

"The most important thing is promotion of healthy lifestyles and engagement of kids in sambo training."
