A Confederation of African Football (CAF) inspection team will visit Kenya to assess whether the country will be stripped of the hosting rights for the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) next week, it has been announced.

The eight-member panel will conduct the visit from Monday (September 11) until next Sunday (September 17).

CAF second vice-president and FIFA Council member Constant Omari, head of the inspection team, are due to present their report at an Executive Committee meeting in Accra in Ghana on September 23.

A decision will then be taken over Kenya's hosting of the event, the second-tier competition behind the Africa Cup of Nations, amid concerns over infrastructure.

Omari recently visited Kenya to inspect their progress before it was cancelled due to political unrest in the country.

A general election was held last month but the results were overturned by the Supreme Court following irregularities in the counting up of the votes.

The country will take to the polls for a re-run on October 8.

The political situation has added to the uncertainty surrounding Kenya's capability of staging the biennial CHAN event.

The Government need to provide funding in the region of $46 million (£35 million/€38 million) in order for the country to host the competition.

Principal Secretary in charge of sports development Peter Kaberia has insisted that the tournament will take place as planned.

It is due to be held next year from January 12 to February 14 using venues in Nairobi, Kasarani, Mombasa and Meru.

"A lot has been said behind the scenes just like it was the case during the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) World Under 18 Championships which we went on to host successfully," Kaberia said.

"We are determined to host CHAN and do it well.

"We call upon the sporting fraternity to be positive as we are focused to delivering within time.

"We even toured one of the stadiums to have a view of the progress.

"He [Omari] was indeed impressed and so we are waiting for the last inspection."

The competition differs from the higher-level Africa Cup of Nations as only players who represent clubs on the continent are allowed to take part.
