The top seeds in both the men's and women's singles competitions have safely made it through at the Badminton World Federation Vietnam Open in Ho Chi Minh City today.

Chinese Taipei's Hsu Jen-hao, the favourite in the men's competition, and women's top seed Sayaka Takahashi of Japan were both winners today at the Nguyen Du Stadium.

Hsu is playing at the tournament, a Grand Prix Gold level event, after being part of the mixed team gold medallists at his home Summer Universiade in Taipei last month.

However, he narrowly avoided a scare against Rahul Yadav Chittaboina today, with the Indian claiming the opening set 21-10.

Hsu, ranked 28th in the world, showed his superiority, though, by charging back to take the second and third sets 21-13, 21-19 to reach the third round.

The women's draw began today and Takahashi won in much more comfortable fashion, easing to a 21-18, 21-10 victory over Malaysia's Yee Yap.

Elsewhere in the men's competition, Thai third seed Khosit Phetpradab also advanced after he beat Shih Kuei-chun of Chinese Taipei 22-20, 21-11.

Wei Feng Chong of Malaysia also sealed his place in the next round.

The tournament's fifth seed saw off Chia Hung Lu of Chinese Taipei 21-18, 21-8.

Hanna Ramadini of Indonesia, seeded second in the women's singles, scraped through to round two following a thrilling contest with Yen Mei Ho of Malaysia.

Very little separated the two players throughout but it was Ramadini who ultimately prevailed 25-23, 24-22.

Two of the top three seeds in the women's event are Indonesian and Ramadini's compatriot, Dinar Dyah Ayustine, is also through.

The third seed proved too strong for Selvaduray Kisona of Malaysia, winning 21-17, 21-18.
