Technical races have begun today ©ISA

Action has begun today in the second part of the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Stand Up Paddle (SUP) and Paddleboard Championship in north-west Denmark.

It followed a rest day yesterday during which surfers travelled from Copenhagen to Vorupør, known as "Cold Hawaii", for technical races, SUP surfing and relay races.

A record-breaking 286 athletes from 42 countries are participating.

Heats and repêchages took place in the technical divisions today.

Winners today included Bruno Hasulyo of Hungary, Connor Baxter of Hawaii and James Casey of Australia.

It followed an Opening Ceremony in Vorupør attended by ISA President Fernando Aguerre and Lene Kjelgaard, Mayor of the nearby town of Thisted.

"This is the first Championship of its kind to take place in Europe it is set to break participation records," said Kjelgaard.

"Nearly 300 athletes from over 40 countries will test their strengths against the waves of Cold Hawaii.

"I am proud to conclude that we succeeded in arranging this event in a quite untraditional cooperation between the nation’s capital, Copenhagen, and the fishing village of Vorupør on the coastline of Cold Hawaii.

"It’s commendable that the small village of Vorupør play such a major role in this event."

Action is scheduled to continue until Sunday (September 10).
