It is hoped that surrounding Muhlen with top talent from the American squad will help boost the 19-year-old's own performances. 

Muhlen won a bronze medal in ski cross at the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer last year but is hoping to make a mark in Alpine skiing.

He has already established himself as a regular podium finisher in international Alpine races held by the International Ski Federation (FIS).

The teenager is currently with the US squad in New Zealand and will head to the American training base in Colorado in November.

He will receive high performance on-snow coaching and strength and conditioning training and will compete in North American Cup competitions.

His aim is to break into the FIS World Cup circuit.

"It's a really great opportunity and one that I really want to make the most of," said Muhlen, who will work on both speed and technical skiing disciplines.

"One day I hope Australia will be able to bring together its top young athletes and have them travel and train together all season like with this programme."

Mick Branch, the Alpine director at Ski and Snowboard Australia, added: "Louis is a promising talent and will have the opportunity to maximise his potential as he integrates into the US ski team programme.

"This is an invaluable opportunity."
