Former Australian Sailing high performance head Peter Conde has been announced as the replacement for Matt Favier as director of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).

It comes after an impressive eight years at the helm of the national sailing team.

Australian athletes claimed four gold and four silver medals under his watch.

Favier had announced in June that he was stepping down after five years in order to take up a new role as chief executive of Hockey Australia.

He claimed the shift was unrelated to the highly-publicised falling out between the AIS and the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) in recent months.

Freshly re-elected AOC head John Coates singled out Favier for criticism in an attack on the targeted funding approach of the "Winning Edge" strategy he spearheaded.

He was also accused of being part of the ultimately unsuccessful campaign to unseat Coates earlier this year.

The AOC, in contrast, appear happy at the appointment of Conde.

“Having known and worked with Peter for three years while chief executive of Australian Sailing I know he will make a great contribution to Australian sport," said the body's chief executive Matt Carroll.

"I have great respect for his abilities and leadership skills to take the AIS and Australian sport into the future.

“The AOC looks forward to continuing to work closely with the AIS as well as building a constructive working relationship with Peter and his team.

“Peter has helped sailing succeed at the highest level of the sport and we’re confident he will carry this success into his new role at the AIS.”
