The secretary general of the Syrian Olympic Committee thanked Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) President Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah after winning a bronze medal at the International Swimming Federation World Masters Championships.

Feras Mouala finished third out of 108 swimmers in the three-kilometres competition in Hungarian capital Budapest.

The 45-year-old Feras, also the President of the Syrian Swimming Federation, already boasted several titles from other international events.

This is despite having to train in a country which has been ravaged by war.

Mouala claimed the result was achieved due to the special support of the OCA and its President, Sheikh Ahmad.

Sheikh Ahmad, also the President of the Association of National Olympic Committees, is said to have backed "Syrian sport in general".

The war in Syria has made sport difficult for the country's athletes.

High jumper Majededdin Ghazal, however, did manage to claim an emotional bronze medal at this month's International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships in London.

He cleared a best of 2.29 metres.

Ghazal was also the flagbearer for Syria's Olympic team at Rio 2016.

The country sent seven athletes to compete in five sports.

In addition, two Syrian-born competitors appeared for the International Olympic Committee's refugee team.

Syria has won one Olympic medal of each colour in its history.

The gold was claimed in the heptathlon by Ghada Shouaa at Atlanta 1996.
