Australia clinched the 2017 International Basketball Federation Asia Cup title this evening with a 79-56 win over Iran in Lebanon.

The Australians held a 13-point lead going into the final quarter and they had extended that by a further 10 come the end of the final at the Nouhad Nawfal Stadium in Beirut.  

Brad Newley top scored for the victors with 18 points, marking his best game of the tournament.

Daniel Kickert amassed 14 points and Mitch Creek racked up 12.

Australia went unbeaten throughout the competition with their lowest margin of victory being 16 points.

Iran's Hamed Haddadi, the tournament's Most Valuable Player, led hist country's scoring chart with 18.

He was joined by Behnam Yakhchali as the only other player in double figures with 10.

The event was the first-ever Asia-Oceania joint Continental Championship with 16 teams, including Australia and New Zealand.

In the bronze medal match, South Korea beat New Zealand 80-71.

China defeated hosts Lebanon 79-78 in the fifth-place play-off, while the Philippines overcame Jordan 75-70 in the battle to avoid finishing in last position.
