Russia has been granted provisional membership of the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) after they were suspended from the governing body last year.

The Russian DanceSport Union (RDSU) was expelled in November after the organisation failed to meet a series of clearly defined conditions and provisions.

A new governing body for the sport in Russia - the All Russian Federation of DanceSport and Acrobatic Rock ’n’ Roll (FSARR) - has since been formed and has been accepted as a provisional member of the WDSF for a one-year period.

Nadezhda Erastova was elected as the FSARR President and submitted documents in support of the application to the WDSF at the worldwide organisation's General Meeting in Singapore in June.

The WDSF rejected their application and instead ordered the FSARR to amend certain elements of the documents provided.

The global governing body gave the FSARR assurances, however, that it could still be approved by a deadline of July 13, which they needed to meet in order to be given financial backing by the Russian Sports Ministry.

Provisional membership was given to the new Russian body on July 6.

Erastova is a senior official of the Moscow City Government, is known to be close to Ekaterina Tikhonova, an acrobatic dancer and allegedly the daughter of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In a statement, the WDSF said they were confident outstanding issues could be addressed, paving the way for Russia to be welcomed back into the worldwide organisation in the near future.

"With regards to the provisional status and the limited term of the new member body's membership, WDSF is confident that the remaining problems can easily be sorted out over the next few months, with both parties committing to continue their excellent collaboration with renewed energy and good faith," the WDSF said.

The WDSF also criticised the previous RDSU regime, led by former President Irina Petrova, claiming they "failed in their mission to provide Russian DanceSport with the integrity and the democratic principles required of a national governing body".
