Irving Perez marked Yucatán’s debut on the International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Cup circuit in style as the Mexican delivered victory in front of a home crowd.

Racing took place at Mérida, located in the Mexican state, with locals providing strong encouragement for Perez.

Perez was part of a chasing group on the bike leg of the race, with the United States' Seth Rider and Jumpei Furuya of Japan breaking clear shortly after the swim.

The duo were caught in the early stages of the run, with Perez then breaking away towards the finish.

The Mexican completed the course in a time of 54min, 56sec to claim the victory.

It marked the first time since 2015 that Perez had featured on a World Cup podium.

He was joined by his compatriot Cesar Saracho and Germany's Maximilian Schwetz, who finished in 55:02 and 55:04 respectively.

"I am very happy for this victory," said Perez.

"This is my second time that I win here in Mexico, the last time was in Huatulco and now in Yucatán where it is hot, but for me it is better.

"I am very happy with my team and with my coach."

The United States replicated Mexico's achievement, as they achieved a one-two in the women's race.

Summer Cook claimed the victory in a time of 1:00:17, having broken away from the rest of the field.

She was followed by her team-mate Lindsey Jerdonek, who finished 26 seconds down on the winner's time.

The top three was rounded off by Austria's Lisa Perterer, after she was a further four seconds back.
