Reigning International Swimming Federation (FINA) Swimming World Cup champions Vladimir Morozov of Russia and Hungary’s Katinka Hosszú set records on the opening day of competition in Berlin.

The pair achieved World Cup record times in events as action began at the Europa Sportpark.

Morozov was triumphant in the men’s 100 metres freestyle competition, touching home in 45.23sec.

He was pushed closely by South Africa’s Chad le Clos, second in 45.78, while a time of 46.19 was enough for Poland’s Kacper Majchrzak to take the bronze medal.

A World Cup record time of 4min 19.82sec was enough for Hosszú to win the women’s 400m individual medley, one of the two events she was crowd world champion in last month in front of a home crowd in Budapest.

The Hungarian was followed by Spain’s Mireia Belmonte and Australia’s Blair Evans, who finished in 4:22.55 and 4:29.56 respectively.

Sweden’s Sarah Sjöström, who broke two world records at the opening World Cup of the season in Moscow, continued her fine form in Berlin.

The 23-year-old won the women’s 50m butterfly in 24.97, touching out her Dutch rival Ranomi Kromowidjojo, who finished in 24.95.

Kromowidjojo’s team-mate Maaike De Waard rounded off the top three in 25.24.

Sjöström quickly recovered from her exertions to triumph in the women’s 200m freestyle in 1:51.56.

Italy’s Federica Pellegrini and The Netherlands’ Femke Heemskerk finished second and third in 1:52.05 and 1:52.23 respectively.

Dutch swimmers continued to miss out on gold medals, as Australia’s Emily Seebhom won the women’s 50m backstroke in 26.15.

Kira Toussaint and Maaike De Waard, both of The Netherlands, won siver and bronze medals in 26.24 and 26.55.

Having missed out on gold in the men’s 100m freestyle, le Clos won 50m butterfly event.

Le Clos, the world champion over 200m, won over the shorter distance in a time of 22.32.

He was followed by Belarus’ Yauhen Tsurkin and Britain’s Adam Barrett, who swam 22.49 and 22.53 respectively.

Le Clos’ team-mate Cameron Van der Burgh was forced to settle for the silver medal in the men’s 100m breaststroke event.

Russia’s Kirill Prigoda touch first in 56.35, with Van der Burgh ending just 0.03 seconds off the pace to end as the runner-up.

The top three was completed by Ilya Shymanovich, the Belarusian clocking 56.57.

Over the 200m distance, Poland’s Radoslaw Kawecki secured victory in a time of 1:48.20, with Japan’s Masaki Kaneko taking the silver medal in 1:49.11.

Christian Eirk Diener earned Germany’s first medal of their home World Cup, as he claimed the bronze medal in 1:49.30.

The host nation's first gold medal was earned by Philip Heintz, winner of the men's 200m individual medley in 1:52.64.

Prigoda and Hong Kong's Kenneth To followed the German in 1:54.05 and 1:54.97.

The women’s 200m breaststroke was won by Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson, who finished in a time of 2:18.96.

Denmark’s Rikke Pedersen and Belgium’s Fanny Lecluyse rounding off the top three in 2:19.52 and 2:19.96.

Competition is scheduled to continue tomorrow.

The third leg of the FINA World Cup is due to take place Eindhoven on August 11 and 12.
