Nigeria’s Government have pledged an additional N50 million (£105,000/$137,000/€117,000) to support the construction of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa’s (ANOCA) headquarters in Abuja.

Confirmation of the increased support came during the ANOCA Executive Committee meeting.

It was the first Executive Committee to be hld since the ANOCA General Assembly in Dijbouti, in May where Lassana Palenfo was re-elected as the organisation’s President for a further four years.

Abdulrazak Salau, representing Nigeria’s Minister of Youth and Sports Development Solomon Dalung, was present to welcome the officials.

He confirmed funding for the project, with the vast majority of the money set to be put towards the completion of the headquarters building.

"The total sum of N314 million (£662,000/$872,000/€734,000) would be paid by the government to complete the project," Salau said, according to The Daily Trust.

"I can also assure you that the building will be ready for commissioning in due course.

"May I use this opportunity to call on the Executive Members to use their vast experience while holding forth these exalted position to ensure the interest of our continent is adequately and professionally protected."

Additional funding from the Government will then be used to held furnish the headquarters, following its completion.

Palenfo reportedly expressed his thanks to the Nigerian Government for their support in helping to complete the project.

The Ivorian also claimed ANOCA were in the position to aid Governments efforts to boost sport and aid their athletes to qualify for major international events, such as the Olympic Games.
