Home favourite Pernille Mathiesen won the women’s under-23 title as action continued today at the European Cycling Union Road Championships in Danish city Herning.

The 19-year-old clocked a time of 2 hours 32min 50sec to finish seven seconds clear of the chasing pack.

Norway’s Susanne Andersen and Great Britain’s Alice Barnes came second and third respectively.

In the women’s junior race, The Netherlands’ Lorena Wiebes triumphed after a sprint finish to the line.

The winning time was 1:32:21 with Denmark’s Emma Cecilie Norsgaard Jørgensen second and Italy’s Letizia Paternoster third.

There was also a sprint finish in the men’s junior race with Italy’s Michele Gazzoli coming out on top in 2:41:22.

Norway’s Søren Wærenskjold was the runner-up with Germany’s Niklas Märkl third. 

The event in Herning continues tomorrow with road races for elite women and under-23 men.
