Paola Egonu was in hot form today for Italy as she scored 32 points in their victory over the United States at the International Volleyball Federation World Grand Prix Group One Finals.

Her tally consisted of 24 attacks, six blocks and two serves as Italy secured a semi-final place in China with a 25-21, 22-25, 25-22, 25-21 win.

The 19-year-old’s performance saw her fire home double the amount of points as the second highest in the match at the Nanjing Olympics Sport Centre.

Andrea Drews ended the match with 16 points for the US, who have now lost three matches in a row.

Defending champions Brazil bounced back from yesterday’s loss to China with a five sets victory over The Netherlands.

Tandara Caixeta added to the 18 points she got against the hosts with a further 25 today as the South Americans came from behind twice to eventually win 25-27, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 15-11.

Her team-mate Rosamaria Montibeller scored 22 while Celeste Plak contributed 28 to the Dutch total.

Tomorrow’s matches see Serbia face Italy before China take on The Netherlands.
