The International Union of Powerboating (UIM) co-hosted the inaugural international motorsports and environment workshop in Monaco.

Held alongside the Solar and Electric Boat Challenge, UIM President Raffaele Chiulli and engineer Marco Casigrahi led proceedings as they sought to exchange ideas on best practice.

Representatives from the International Automobile Federation, the World Motorbike Federation and the World Air Sports Federation were among those present.

The renewable-energy industry was also represented through Design Studios and Academia, with discussions taking place on how to apply sustainable energy sources for mobility on water, land and air.

Chiulli called on the motorsport community and international federations to continue to fully support green initiatives, such as the Solar and Electric Boat Challenge.

"We would like to use this opportunity to share with and learn from all parties present here today," he said at the start of the workshop.

"It is about time that we use our talents together."

A total of 14 experts spoke at the two-hour session, with a focus on driving healthy competition and helping young innovators who are the driving force behind global sustainability research and development efforts.

Topics also included the challenges and rewards of sustainable energy, steps organisations were taking to offset their carbon footprint and the means of propulsion in the major motorsport bodies.

"This event is a way to raise public awareness," said Casiraghi.

"Sustainable energy sources exist today and it is up to us to demonstrate their application."

At the workshop, representatives discussed key impacts of sustainable technology, an energy sustainable future and the way forward for eco-friendlier motorsport activities.

The event is scheduled to be part of future editions of the Solar and Electric Boat Challenge, which features boats only powered by the sun.
