Germany stunned Canada to upset the seeding and qualify for the quarter-finals of the women's team event today at the World Squash Federation Junior Championships in New Zealand.

Germany were ranked 10th in comparison with their seventh ranked opponents in the final match of the day at the Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre in Tauranga.

But the form book was well and truly ripped up as Kacenka Tycova and Saskia Beinhard each secured victories.

It meant that the European nation reached the last eight for the first time since 2001.

They will now face Egypt for a place in the semi-finals.

"Very, very happy," said team manager Rainer Mueller.

"At the beginning we never thought we would qualify, but I'm very proud of the team.

"We play Egypt now, which will be difficult, but we'll enjoy tonight’s success and see what happens tomorrow."

The Egyptians, the defending champions and hot favourites, enjoyed a day off today after already winning Pool A.

Hosts New Zealand beat Australia 2-1 to set up a quarter-final against Pool B winners Malaysia.

England beat South Africa 3-0 to win Pool C.

Hong Kong and United States both progressed from Pool D after respective 3-0 victories over Ireland and South Korea.

Hong Kong had earlier edged the US 2-1 to ensure they topped the group.

The team event is following the singles tournaments, with Egypt’s Marwan Tarek and Rowan Reda Araby clinching the respective men's and women's crowns.
