Alexander Vasyukhno has led a Russian charge at the European Track Junior and Under-23 Championships in Anadia with victory in the under-23 1,000 metres time trial.

The 20-year-old triumphed in a time of 1min 01.345sec at the Sangalhos Velodrome.

It came at the end of a breakthrough season in which he also came fifth at the senior level World Championships in Hong Kong.

Britain's Joe Truman posted 1:01.830 in the race against the clock to take second place.

Third went to Sam Ligtlee of The Netherlands in 1:02.045.

A second Russian victory came in the junior age group category in the men's individual pursuit.

Ivan Smirnov took the win in 3min 19.050sec.

He beat Ireland's Xeno Young's time of 3:22.268 as Britain's Rhys Britton won the bronze medal race in 3:20.125.

Letizia Paternoster of Italy secured victory in the corresponding women's junior race after winning in 2:22.140.

It added to her wins in the team pursuit and elimination races.

Russia only just missed out on another gold as Maria Novolodskaya finished second in 2:25.499.

Mylene De Zoete of The Netherlands clocked 2:25.125 for bronze.
