Malaysia’s Joo Ven Soong, India’s Subhankar Dey and Ukraine’s Artem Pochtarov were all eliminated from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Russian Open Grand Prix in Vladivostok today, leaving just three seeded players left in the men’s singles competition.

Joo was the most notable casualty as the third seed suffered an 13-11, 5-11, 11-8, 5-11, 10-12 defeat at the hands of Japan’s Ryotaro Maruo at the Sport Hall Olympic.

Fourth seed Dey lost to fellow Indian Rahul Yadav Chittaboina 13-11, 4-11, 6-11, 7-11, while sixth seed Pochtarov was beaten 11-6, 4-11, 8-11, 10-12 by Japan’s Haruki Fukuda.

Russia’s Vladimir Malkov is the favourite for the men’s title following the withdrawal of top seeded-Indian Sourabh Verma.

He continued his quest for glory with an 11-4, 6-11, 11-5, 11-4 win over compatriot Alexandr Kozyrev.

Due up next for the second seed is eighth-seeded Indian Anand Pawar, who came from behind to beat Malaysia’s Lim Chi Wing 10-12, 11-6, 11-7, 12-10.

Fifth seed Sergey Sirant of Russia is also though to the quarter-finals thanks to a 5-11, 11-3, 11-8, 14-12 victory over fellow countryman Denis Grachev.

In the women’s singles competition, the top seven seeds are all through to the quarter-finals.

Favourite Soniia Cheah of Malaysia eased to an 11-5, 11-8, 11-7 win over India’s Anura Prabhudesai to set up a last-eight encounter with fifth seed Shiori Saito of Japan.

Saito beat Russia’s Viktoriia Vorobeva 11-3, 6-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-7.

Still on course to meet Cheah in the final is second-seeded Russian Evgeniya Kosetskaya, who defeated compatriot Elizaveta Pyatina 11-3, 11-3, 11-7.

Competition in Vladivostok is due to continue tomorrow.

US Open action continued today at the Anaheim Convention Center, where top seed and home favourite Beiwen Zhang progressed through to the women's singles quarter-finals with a 21-16, 21-12 win over Japan's Yui Hashimoto. 

India's Prannoy Kumar, the favourite for the men's singles crown following the elimination of top seed Lee Hyun-il of South Korea yesterday, won both of his matches to reach the quarter-finals.

The second seed firstly beat Ireland's Joshua Magee 21-13, 21-17 and then The Netherlands' Mark Caljouw 21-8, 14-21, 21-16.
