Colombia’s Matias Knudsen produced the biggest upset on the opening day of the World Squash Federation Junior Championships in New Zealand after beating seeded player Mansoor Zaman Jnr of Pakistan at the Devoy Squash and Fitness Centre in Tauranga.

Knudsen fought back from two games down to triumph 7-11, 9-11, 12-10, 11-6, 11-9 at the expense of Zaman Jnr, who was expected to reach the last-16 stage at the very least.

The 17-year-old from Bogotá will now face further Pakistan opposition, Abbas Zeb, in the third round.

Zeb defeated India’s Veer Chotrani 11-8, 11-7, 11-5 today.

Egypt’s Youssef Ibrahim, the men’s top seed, eased into the third round after defeating Canada’s Salaheldin Eltorgman 11-2, 11-6, 11-3.

Second seed Mohammad Al Sarraj, who is bidding to become the first player from Jordan to win a world title, beat home hope Mitchell Kempton 5-11, 11-4, 11-7, 11-3.

Both of the top seeds had received byes in round one.

Kaitlyn Watts, the highest-ranked New Zealander in the women's draw, delighted home supporters with an 11-4, 11-2, 11-6 victory over Australia’s Courtney Mather in just 18 minutes.

The 16-year-old from Palmerston North next goes up against Malaysian Chan Yiwen, who overcame South Africa’s Danielle Shone 11-5, 11-5, 11-2.

Top seed Hania El Hammamy of Egypt beat India’s Ashita Bhengra 11-2, 11-1, 11-3, while second-seeded compatriot Zeina Mickawy defeated the United States’ Elisabeth Ross 9-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-7.

A total of 64 players will line up in the third round of the men's and women’s competitions tomorrow.
